Getting Started/Day 1: Frame and Plan:
Jade and I are currently working through the Frame and Plan stage and are also diving into our initial research. To kick us off, our project advisor, Becky Slogeris, connected to us a teacher who worked with Becky and a previous Social Design student to work through and complete a Design for Change project with one of her classes back in 2016. This wonderful connection with Melissa of Lakeland Elementary/Middle gave us invaluable feedback. Melissa’s input around her experience incorporating a DFC project into her classroom, as well as her knowledge around what Baltimore City Public School teachers are focused on and dealing with right now offered Jade and I a new perspective for how we are planning to move forward with this work.
As a result of our first step in framing and planning this work, Jade and I decided that we want to take a little more time to talk with a few more teachers in order to understand their needs, as well as further research the history and landscape of public education here in Baltimore City.
Our first official meeting of 2019 was one where we began mapping out our assets and connections around the city, possible approaches we could take when looking to implement our work, as well as challenges to keep in mind and design principles to guide us throughout our work with teachers.
We will remain in the framing, planning, and researching phase for the next week or two as we gain better understandings of how we can best support Baltimore City Public Schools in incorporating design and the “I Can” mindset into their overall culture and practice.
Stay tuned and connected as we continue this work throughout the next several months!
