Workshop #2 FEEL

Tuesday, April 9, 2019

We kicked off Workshop #2 by reviewing the Team Agreements and activities from the previous week. We then discussed what the students remembered about each of their “day in life” worksheets, where they mapped out how they felt throughout the school day based on what classes or activities were going on at different times.

Jade and I then introduced the themes we noticed about the scholars’ shared high and low points throughout the day. Each student seemed to have both very positive and negative experiences depending on which class they were in at the time. Because of that commonality, we talked with each other about how our work could focus on improving our classroom environments.

From there, we introduced the scholars to their next task: Interviews. We had students pair up and interview each other about their experiences at school. But before they started their interviews, we went over some general rules/things to keep in mind while interviewing, which included:

  • Be sure to ask open-ended questions or invite the interviewee to tell a story about a particular time instead of asking yes or no questions.
  • Don’t finish the sentence for the interviewee.
  • Don’t ask guiding questions.
  • And be sure to actively listen.

The students then spent several minutes drafting their own interview questions before breaking off into groups and conducting their interviews.

After finishing the interviews. We asked each student to grab sticky notes and write down 2 things they heard from their partner that surprised them and 2 things that they had in common in their partner.

We ended the day with a quick check-out, and Jade and I took their notes and key takeaways back to the studio to synthesize and theme!
